The Crane

Address: St. Philip  |
Set on the world-famous Crane Beach, overlooking a perfect azure blue sea, is the Caribbean's first resort hotel. Built in 1887 and fully restored and expanded in the 20th century, this truly unique property combines elegance, old-world charm and incredible natural beauty with a romantic sense of seclusion, creating a feeling among guests of having retreated to a spot on earth where life is truly…simpler.

The Crane has preserved the historical flair of the lavish 18th century mansion that is the original centerpiece of the present resort. Each suite in the historic hotel features high ceilings, hardwood floors and authentic antique furnishings. All of the suites also have a spectacular ocean view and many have mahogany four-poster beds.

We had a wonderful week at the Crane in Barbados. There is still a flurry of construction happening as the managemewnt struggles to open the 'village' by Christmas. It really was not much of a nuisance, and my brother-in-law and I actually enjoyed watching the progress from the balcony most mornings. It was rather a good way to enjoy our coffee. The food at the Crane was wonderful, but we also ate at rum shops and at Oistins. All and all, we had a great time and will surely return.

You need a car if you stay here, but Barbados is better with a car, anyway. The views from the rooms are spectacular. All rooms are huge with walls of coral stone block. West coast hotels pale in comparison.

We thought the hotel was very nice and we enjoyed a wonderful dinner here. The location is way off of the beaten path and the large multi-floor buildings seem a bit out of place but the property and service are very good.

Absolutely wonderful resort - first class all the way. I can't recommend it enough! It was elegant, relaxing and luxorious. But still excellent for families. The best resort I have ever been to. The only down-sides were (1) only one restaurant onsite (or anywhere nearby) which wasn't too good for kids, (2) beach was lovely but the waves were rough for young kids, and (3) location is a bit remote if you want to see the rest of the island...but why bother when you've got the best Barbados has to offer right at The Crane.

Americans buy a lot of stuff. When something stops working, we’re quick to junk and buy a new one — cars, washing machines, microwaves, TV stands. But even junk may have value. In a tough economy, more and more people are realizing that there’s money to be made and saved by selling or reusing someone else’s stuff, and they’re part of a $54 billion scrap recycling industry

Some of you may be following the row in the United States over plans to build a mosque and community centre two blocks away from Ground Zero. Sarah Palin infamously urged "peaceful Muslims" to "refudiate" (?!?) the mosque and asked "Ground Zero supporters" (who or what are they, exactly?): "doesn't it stab you in the heart"?
