Family run for generations, the Avila Beach Hotel can boast a unique history that covers more than 200 years. Time seems to stand still here.
Ceiling fans whirl slowly. The air smells sweetly of hibiscus and trinitaria (bougainvillea). The resident cat stretches lazily on sofa in the lobby. Palm trees on the beach seem to wave welcome. Brightly-painted fishing boats chug across the azure sea. A full moon chases a warm sun westward. Another perfect day magically evolves into yet another balmy, star-studded night.
The heart of the Avila Beach Hotel is a beautiful Dutch Colonial style mansion, which today houses the lobby and various executive offices of the hotel. It is estimated that the original mansion was built at the end of the 18th century. During the British rule at the beginning of the 19th century, it became the residence of the British Governors and later on that of the Dutch. The original part of the complex was called "La Belle Alliance". Another building of great historical importance on the Avila grounds is the charming seaside cupolo known as the Octagon because of its octagonal shape. Around 1812, the Venezuelan liberator Simón BolÃÂvar and his two sisters took refuge at the Octagon during their time of exile from the Venezuelan war of independence against Spain. Today this building serves as a small museun in memory of the connection between Simón BolÃÂvar and Curaçao.

What a wonderful surprise the Avila was! We stayed in the Blues Wing overlooking a small inlet and Beach on the back side of the hotel. The staff was prompt, courteous and friendly. Our room was gorgeous with a nice mini kitchen, fridge and coffee maker.The food at the restaurant, bar and in the Blues Grill was VERY good, albeit a bit pricey.We'll go back.Ron and Marian in Houston
